Joining a bonsai club is highly recommended to start and progress in a bonsai hobby. In addition to workshops, most clubs organize tours, contests, and exhibitions; a great way to learn as much or as little as you want about bonsai growing. In the United States, about 183 bonsai clubs and organizations have been founded, most of them members of the American Bonsai Society (ABS) or one of the regional bonsai societies (see list below). The Central Virginia Bonsai Society was founded in 1986 to promote the appreciation and enjoyment of Bonsai in Central Virginia through the education, involvement, and mutual support of its members. There are usually four meetings in spring and two meetings in autumn, coinciding with the busiest times to work with Bonsai. CVBS is co-sponsored by the Lynchburg Recreation Department. Meetings are held at various times and locations. Notice of time, place, and topic is given through the bulletin. The meeting format is flexible, but usually consists of a planned agenda for the main event, followed by an opportunity for members to ask questions or present a "group therapy" problem plan.
